The former New Zealand cricketer C. S. Dempster took a team to Birmingham recently to play for the Lord Mayor's Relief Fund. Cricket enthusiasts were given a treat when he hit up 57 runs ill 20 minutes. Oit 11 balls he scored 33, including four successive fours. The fund benefited by more than £SO. Discussing the lack of stamina in'young boxers of to-day, Tommy Burns, former world’s champion, oilers the following advice:—"lf they chewed their food until it became a liquid, and did not drink with their meals, but an hour before or after; ate more fresh fruit and raw vegetables, particularly raw carrots and carrot juice, and kept away from starchy and greasy foods, they would have twice the energy. Boys to-day are too load of dancing and parties, which cut down their rest and rob*them of vitality. In the main, they do not attacli enough importance to fresh air and deep breathing." Prizes of £1335 were paid to metropolitan cyclists, £BOOO for country races, and £2280 to riders in the two six-day events.
