Waimata Valley .-The institute held a very enjoyable meeting in the Waimata Hall on Saturday, August 2. the chair being taken by Mrs. lingers, with Mrs. J. L. Graham acting as secretary. A short talk was given Oil the patriotic zone committee s work. the motto was "Trust every man till you find him false." and the roll call, an exchange ol seedlings. The guest of the afternoon was Mr. Shaekleton. who gave a very clear address oil "Peace Alter Wai, aftet which an interesting discussion took place. The sewing competition, pyjamas lor refugees, was won by Mrs. T. Daily, with Miss M. Jones second. The cooking competition, biscuits for the shop, resulted. Mts. i\ Daily, 1 ; Mrs. Rogers, 2. Whaiigarn.—The monthly meeting held in the Community hall, on Thursday, August 7, was attended by 13 members. The institute decided to enter in the institute section at the A. and P. Show in November, and members were allotted various garments to be made for the entry. Members were very interested in hearing of a spinning demonstration which was given in Waipukurau at a recent voluntary organisers’ school. It was decided to write and find out particulars concerning a small spinning wheel which could h ■ attached to a sewing machine. At the next meeting a small parcel is to be packed and sent to each soldier from the district serving overseas. Eight pots of jam were sent to the Heni Materoa Children’s Home. A "bring and buy" was arranged to bring in funds to buy material for refugee sewing. Uakauroa.—The August meeting was held last Tuesday. A discussion took place as to the best means of getting a spinning wheel for the use of members because of the present shortage of knitting wool. Emergency precautions were talked over, and plans made to accommodate exacuees in homes and woolsheds. Requests were received for books and periodicals for men in

camp. Makarnka-Matawlicro. —The monthly meeting, held last Wednesday, took the form of a Scotch afternoon, Mrs. Livingston presiding over a large attendance of members. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs. Deal and all who had suffered bereavement through the war. The roll call was a Scotch story, and later an interesting letter from a link of the institute in Essex was rend. A collection was taken for soldiers' parcels, while a number of garments were handed in for the Lady (iahvay Patriotic Guild. Mrs. Wise was chosen its the representative at the meeting of the federation. After afternoon tea had been dispensed, an interesting demonstration on hair-cutting and beauty aids was given by Misses Cox and Jonasen, from the Lorna Nicholson Hairdressing Salon. The demonstrators were later thanked for their lecture and demonstration. The competition for the best Scotch shortbread resulted:—Mrs. Jonasen, t: Mrs. A. Lange, 2; Mrs. S. Jackson. 3. The prize for the best bloom went to. Mrs. Livingston, with Mrs. Campbell second, and Mrs. Wcnslell third.

Patutahi.—The monthly meeting was held on August G, there being only a small atteiidiince of members, over whom Mrs. A. Stevens presided. Much business concerning the annual flower show to be held on November 5 was discussed, Mrs. J. Atkins and Mrs. A. I>. Peach being appointed joint secretaries. Mrs. J. Johnstone was appointed to attend the council meeting. An interesting item. "Impromptu Speeches," caused much amusement. The roll call resulted in many useful suggestions for the programme for the next six months. The monthly competitions resulted: —Peg Bag.— Mrs. A. D. Peach, 1 ; Mrs. 1). Worsuop, 2. Eggless Gingerbread.—Mrs. A. D. Peach, 1; Mrs. D. Worsnop, 2. Next month's hostesses will be Mesdames J. Ttkins and McLoughlin. Ormond.—The institute held its monthly meeting on Tuesday. August 5, there being a good attendance of members. Mrs. MeMiilan, who presided, was welcomed back after her long illness. Mrs. Greig read some interesting articles on four famous women. The roll call was continued by another member, Mrs. Carmichael, giving ail account of her birth place, Arran, in Scotland. Mrs. Long provided the amusement, guessing towns in New Zealand by the first letter, which was won by Mrs. G. Grayson. Garden circle competitions resulted:—Vase of Flowers. —Mrs. G.
