DEATH IN AUCKLAND

MRS. W. C. HAMPTON The death of Mrs. Victoria Sarah Hampton, widow of the late Mr. W. C. Hampton, in Auckland this morning removed one of the Dominion’s older identities. Mrs. Hampton was born in London 91 years ago and at the age of 12 came to New Zealand with her father, Mr. Wilkins, four brothers and three sisters in the vessel Idanziglar. In 18(58 she married the late Mr. W. C. Hampton in the newly-erected All Saints Church, Ponsonby, Auckland, they being among the first couples to be married there. The officiating minister was the Rev. Mr. Bree. For the whole of her married life Mrs. Hampton had lived in Auckland, with the exception of a trip to England in 1884. when Mr, and Mrs. Hampton and eight children returned to London. Mr. Hampton went to England to assist in the management of his father’s engineering business in Loughborough. After two years’ stay in England, however, the family returned to New Zealand again, taking up residence in Auckland, where Mrs. Hampton became well known as a nurse. Mrs. Hampton was always willing to help others and in the latter years of her life made rag dolls which had given joy to hundreds of children in Auckland. To mourn their loss Mrs. Hampton leaves one brother, Mr. W- Wilkins, Auckland, five sons, Mr C. J. Hampton, Wellington, Messrs. E. and C. E. Hampton, Gisborne, and Messrs. M. and R. Hampton, Auckland, and two daughters, Mesdames Harkins and McElroy, both of Auckland. There are also 21 grandchildren and 18 greatchildren.
