The expenditure on public works, which exceeded £9,000,000 in 1940, has dropped to less than £6,000,000 for the financial year just ended, the exact decline being £3,103,011. The most important activities contributing to the lessened expenditure were: Railway improvements and additions to open lines totalling £1,072,159, decrease £1,914,480; railway construction, total £857,931, a decrease of £320,844; roads, total £599,013, a decrease of £525,577. A new item, the development of linen flax, involved an expenditure of £245,976, and is included in the calculation showing the substantial decline in general expenditure for the year.
