NO AIR SCHOOL

AIRPORT UNSUITABLE

MINISTER’S STATEMENT

Neither the Darton Field aerodrome nor its surroundings is suitable, in the view of responsible officers of the Air Board, for the establishment of an air training school, according to advice, received by the Gisborne Borough Council last evening from the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones.

“I regret to say that it is not possible to comply with your request,” the Minister slated. “No further expansion of the Royal New Zealand Air Force is contemplated at present, and moreover, I am advised that neither the aerodrome nor the locality is suitable for the establishment of a flying training school.” The Minis!er added an expression of appreciation of the suggestions from the council, and of the contributions made to air force personnel from the Gisborne-East Coast district. Similar conditions applied to other districts, however. The letter was received.
