ON WAR BASIS
AMERICAN PRODUCTION (Reed. June 3. 1.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 2. President Roosevelt signed the Mandatory Priorities Bill giving the Government legal authority to subordinate civilian needs completely, thus putting the production machinery of the United States on a war basis. The Journal of Commerce says that the Maritime Commission has decided to withdraw all subsidies to American shipping lines in foreign trade because legitimate competition has virtually disappeared.
