ITALIAN LINER SUNK
VICTIM OF TORPEDO AXIS CLAIM WARSHIPS (Reed. May 31, 1.20 p.m.) LONDON, May 30. An Italian communique reports that the Italian liner, Conte Rosso, of 17,048 tons, sailing in convoy in the Mediterranean, was hit by a torpedo. The major part of the crew was saved.
The comrnunl.que adds that Italian air force planes repeatedly attacked enemy naval forces in the eastern Mediterranean. A British destroyer blew up after being hit by a bomb. Many of the crew were rescued. It is officially stated in Berlin that ijhe Luftwaffe sank two British destroyers off Crete on Thursday.
