DISPUTE AT RESTAURANT PROVOCATION PLEADED A dispute between a- restaurantproprietor, Mate Borich, and the secretary of the ’ Hotel and Restaurant Employees’ Union, Edward Bell (Mr. W. J. King), led to the prosecution of Bell before Mr. W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Hamilton Police Court for 'using obscene language. A plea of guilty was entered. Senior-Sergeant G. H. McHugh said the dispute between Bell and Borich, who was a foreigner, might have resulted in a serious breach of the peace or even a riot. Mr; King said there had been considerable friction between the two men over the girls employed by Borich working until 11.20 p.m. Bell was carrying out his duty as union secretary when Borich struck him and knocked out three teeth. Borich then threw him out of the restaurant, and as the result of the extreme provocation received Bell used strong language.

Senior-Sergeant McHugh said he was not aware of the facts stated by Mr. King. Mr. King: Tho police do not know everything. Accused was fined £2 and costs.
