CALL-UP OF DOLLARS
AUSTRAUAN HOLDERS SALE TO GOVERNMENT (Reed. May 30, 11 a.m.) CANBERRA, May 30. Drastic steps to strengthen the Empire dollar exchange pool were taken by the Commonwealth Government yesterday. All persons resident in Australia who own United States dollar funds or currency in any form, either in Australia or overseas, must sell them to the Commonwealth Government.
The Treasurer, Mr. A. W. Fadden, estimates that the funds thus beingtaken over represent about £375,000, comprising mainly bank balances held by Australians in the United States. The Government has also decided to acquire all Canadian dollar credits, either in currency, notes or bank drafts.
