DISPOSAL OF OUTPUT DIFFICULTIES IN FIJI INCREASING DEMAND (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.l (Reed. Mav 29. 10.20 p.m.) SYDNEY. May 29. The production of sugar in Australia in 1940 was 788.000 tons, which was the approximate average of the three years preceding the record season oi' 1989, when the figure was 900,000 tons. The estimate for the coming season is 880.000 tons. The output in Fiji last year was 118.4G3 tons. Tn moving the adoption of the annual report of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company yesterday, the chairman, Mr. Knox, said that despite the shipping shortage, all last season's sugar would be disposed of before the commencement of next season.

Difficulties associated with the marketing of the Fiji crop were substantial. lie was hopeful that a satisfactory arrangement would be completed. The demand for refined sugar in Australia and New Zealand had further increased. The total improvement in sales since the depression was equivalent to 20 per cent. “The war has given a setback to the pineapple industry in Fiji, preventing an expansion of this industry for the present.” said Mr. Knox.

He described how the company was contributing to the war effort by producing munitions and defence material at flic rate of over £250,000 per annum.
