Troops in Egypt

The popularity of Major-General R. C. Freybcrg, V.C., the commander of the New Zealand troops in the Middle East, was referred to by Sapper M. L. Hogan, who was given a reception in the Makaraka-Matawhero Ilali on his return home from active service in Egypt, suffering from ill-health. Sapper Hogan said that Major-General Freyberg mixed freely with the men, and was very popular among them. Everything was done to make camp life pleasant, and the Y.M.C.A. was doing valuable work. The general atmosphere among the men from all parts of the Empire was very cordial, all having the same purpose, to ensure that ‘‘There’ll Always Be an England."
