“DEAD” MAN RETURNS

WINNER OF THE D.S.O. ESCAPE FROM THE ENEMY LONDON, Feb. 22. After reading his own obituaries in British newspapers, Major James C. Windsor Lewis, formerly A.D.C. to the Governor-General of Australia, Lord Gowrie, went to Buckingham Palace to receive the D.S.O. from the King. Major Lewis had been reported missing and believed killed in action while fighting with the Welsh Guards against the Germans last May. It was disclosed in the citation for his D.S.O. that he was wounded and taken prisoner, but later succeeded in escaping. Major Lewis when in Australia limped slightly as the result of a steeplechase accident. His war wound was to the other leg, and' the effects of the injury now made his limp much less noticeable. Major Lewis has rejoined the Welsh Guards. He says that after the war he intends to settle in Australia, “because I am enamoured of Australian life.” The citation says that, at Boulogne in May, Major Lewis’ company was holding a long exposed front. It was heavily attacked for eight hours, during which period all barriers thrown up in the streets were set on fire or destroyed. All his fellow-officers were killed or wounded, but Major Lewis showed the greatest determination and set a splendid example which inspired his men.
