MAORI CRIPPLE
REFORMATIVE DETENTION Reformative detention for a period not exceeding 12 months was ordered Richmond, aged 22, a Maori, who came into the Supreme Court to-day on crutches. The accused was not represented by counsel, and had nothing to say. Mr. Justice Johnson said that the accused had previous convictions. About five years ago ho had broken his hip, and much of his time had been spent in hospital. His mental capacity was not much developed. Somehow or other the accused must be taken away from his present environment, and it was obvious that if he were left alone and just placed on probation he might get into further and probably more serious trouble. He was sorry to sentence a man who was crippled like the accused, but he would be committed to reformative detention not exceeding 12 months.
