LOSS OF SHIPPING
VOLUME OF EVIDENCE PROGRESS OF INQUIRY (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The commission inquiring into certain shipping losses and the alleged leakage of information from New Zealand expects to conclude its Wellington sittings early next week. A great volume of evidence has been taken in Wellington, not merely from survivors of captured ships but also from persons who appeared to be able to throw light on possible leakage and useful precautions against leakage. The witnesses included a number from outside Wellington. The commission proposes to commence its Auckland sitting on Wednesday next, possibly for two days, in order to hear witnesses for whom it was inconvenient to visit Wellington. The commission does not anticipate that it will be necessary to sit elsewhere than in Wellington and Auckland. The Auckland sittings will also be in camera. The venue has not yet been decided, but further information can be obtained by application to the Police Department in Auckland.
