EASIER MARKET

SALE AT MATAWHERO STORE LAMBS AND SHEEP BUYERS MORE CAUTIOUS FAT SECTIONS FIRM The market for store sheep and lambs at the Matawhero stock sale today was decidedly easier, but the fat sections remained firm on last week’s rates. Store lambs were from Is to Is 6d a head lower in value, possibly due to the dry conditions and the scarcity of feed that is now threatening, combined with the added uncertainty regarding the future of the meat export trade. The yarding totalled about 3500 store lambs and sheep, of which nearly 3000 were offered before lunch. Lambs comprised more than 2000 in the morning’s offerings, the greatest part of which were shorn. Wellgrown sorts, shorn, in good condition, reached 14s, one pen being passed in at 14s 3d, and another pen sold at 13s Bd. Others ranged from 7s Id for small to 12s 8d for those of fair size, but most of the pens were passed in, one of small lambs going as low as 6s 6d. Only one pen of woolly wether lambs was sold, this being a fairly well grown line at 13s Id, while a small lot was passed in at 6s. Ewe lambs reached 14s 9d for a fair-sized woolly pen, with another woolly pen at lls 3d and one passed in at 13s 3d, while medium shorn lambs reached 13s.

The remaining entries in the store pens also met an easier market. Only one pen of breeding ewes was sold, this being quite a fair line of 4, 6 and 8-tooth sheep at 13s 6d, while medium two-tooths were passed in at 18s 7d. Fat and forward wethers made a comparatively good sale at 19s, with wellgrown two-tooths at 16s 7d. Mixedsex Southdown two-tooths, of which there was only one pen, sold at 13s 9d. Store Sheep Prices
