COLOGNE PLANTS LARGE FIRES STARTED BOTH SIDES OF RHINE COAST PORTS BOMBED (Klee. Tol. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Feb. 28, 10.20 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 27. It is learned that Royal Air Force bombers attacked industrial targets in Cologne. Berlin admits that tlie industrial region of western Germany was raided and says that bombs dropped from the highest altitudes killed and injured a number of persons. An Air Ministry communique states: “A heavy and successful attack was made last night by Bomber Command aircraft on industrial objectives in Cologne. Many heavy bombs were dropped as well as incendiary bombs. Targets on both sides of the Rhine were hit and numbers of large fires were seen.
“Attacks were also made during the night by aircraft of the Bomber and Coastal Commands on ports in enemyoccupied territory. At Boulogne and Flushing fires were started in the dock areas. Four of our aircraft are missing from these operations. Two of our fighters are missing from patrol operations yesterday.”
The Air Ministry states: “It is now known that the crew of one of the bombers previously reported missing from last night’s operations are safe, the aircraft having landed away from its base.”
