TROOPS ON LEAVE

GISBORNE AND COAST j OVER 240 AFFECTED FIRST GROUP TO-DAY Bound for their homes from distant camps, 44 men travelled from Wairoa to Gisborne ovei'night, arriving early this morning. Some of the men continued their journey up the East Coast. This evening a further 140 xnen from Trentham, and another draft of about 61 from Papakura, are expected to arrive at Gisborne. The latter group will reach here by way of the Taneatua railway and the Waioeka road service, in compliance with the assurance given to the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council some weeks ago by the Minister of Defence, following a protest against the waste of soldiers’ leave-periods in roundabout travelling. Various social functions are being arranged in honour of the troops on leave, and the committee of the Gisborne Soldiers’ Service Club is making arrangements for entertainment for the men.
