RECALL DEMANDED
U.S. ENVOY IN SOFIA ROOSEVELT'S ANSWER (Reed. Feb. 27, 2.15 p.m.) ; , v WASHINGTON, Feb. 26. A member, of the, House of Representatives, Mr, Rich,, demanded that the United , States Minister in Sofia, Mr. G. H. Earle, be recalled for getting into a “drunken brawl.” President Roosevelt said there were no plans for the recall of Mr. Earle in connection with the incident in Sofia.
A cable message from London reported that Mr. Earle figured in a scene in a Sofia restaurant when the orchestra, at his request, began to play “Tipperary.” The Germans present catcalled. One. who was reported to be a soldier in civilian clothes, picked up a bottle and threw it at Mr. Earle.
The Minister put up his arm, which was bruised. Then, as the German was about to throw another bottle, Mr. Earle picked up the nearest missile and hit him with it. The German received a cut on the head and was ejected by waiters. Mr. Earle said: The German threw a bottle. I retaliated by injuring his features. The incident is regrettable but I saw no other alternative.
