WAIKOHU COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL BRIDGE-BUILDING LOAN SHORTAGE OF J.P’S (Special to the Herald.) TE KARAKA, this day. The Waikohu County Council meeting yesterday was presided over by the chairman, Mr. A. A. Fraser. Members present were Messrs. H. C. Boyes. J. B. Williams, H. J. F. Tombleson, and M. Doyle. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. Dods and Gaukrodger. The registrar of the Native Land Court recommended that land required for a roadman’s section in the Hangaroa-Matawai B 4 block be taken under the Public Works Act.—The engineer and riding member were deputed to see if a suitable section could be purchased privately. The district engineer, of the Public Works Department wrote stating that no grant could be made available on this year’s estimates for Shaw’s road.— Received. The district engineer gave notice of the cancellation of the following authorities: Oliver road, £ls 14s, £1 for £1; Rangatira road, £4B 14s 3d, £1 for £1. —Received.

The secretary of the Counties’ Association forwarded a series of opinions relating to local bodies’ elections. — Received.

The reports of the health and noxious weeds inspectors were considered.

It was decided to draw the attention of the chief inspector to ragwort growing on the main highway at the Waioeka junction.

The clerk was instructed to apply for permission from the Department of Agriculture to institute proceedings against two ratepayers for failure to cut variegated thistle.

A special order authorising the raising of a loan of £BOO for the construction of Pendreigh bridge, over the Hangaroa River, was confirmed.

It was decided to make representations to the Department of Justice regarding the shortage of J.P.s in the neighbourhood of Te Karaka and Whatatutu. It was pointed out that there was only one J.P. between Otoko and Kaitaratahi, with none at all in the Whatatutu or Kanakanaia areas. The position had been made more acute by the recent departure of some J.P.s.

It was decided to draw the attention of the Railways Department to the danger to travelling stock caused by the erection of a pumping plant against the Whatatutu highway at the Puha bridge. It was pointed out that the structure might cause a stampede when cattle were crossing the bridge.

The engineer was instructed to have some metalling done between Quirk’s mill and the bush from which logs were being obtained.
