CRICKET IN WAIROA

ROVERS BEAT NOMADS SCHOOL BEAT RETAILERS (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Matches in the Wairoa Cricket SubAssociation’s Hopper Shield competition were resumed last week-end. Batting four men short, Rovers gained an easy win over Nomads by 44 runs. Nomads had first use of the wicket and when the last wicket fell 84 runs were on the board, L. Grieve, 23, and C. Mann, 17, being the principal run-getters. Bowling for Rovers, H. M. Croker secured five wickets for 30 runs. The opening batsmen for Rovers, H. Cook and D. McKenzie, severely punished the Nomads’ bowling, both retiring with 53 and 62 respectively. The innings closed with six wickets down for 128 runs. For Nomads, R'. Selby took two wickets for 13 runs and M. Unwin two for 43.

Victory by 46 runs on the first innings went the way of High School when they met Retailers. Batting first, Retailers were dismissed for 42 runs, 21 of which came from W. Sainsbury. Bowling for School, J. Nightingale took three wickets for 22 runs, and Kennedy took two for two. Due mainly to a good stand by G. Sutherland, who retired with 47 to his credit, High School’s first innings realised 88 runs. Nichol captured three High School wickets for 17 runs and N. Sainsbury three for seven. In the second innings Retailers were dismissed for 66, W. Sainsbury again top-scoring with 27. Bowling honours for School were shared by Sutherland, two for nine, R. H. Bean, two for five, and R. T. Bean, two for none.
