NEW SCHEME FUNCTIONS TOTAL OF 200 ACRES The certification of ryegrass seed this year is under a new scheme which provides for field inspection of only three classes of seed,. Government stock seed, produced, from nucleus seed, pedigree seed, produced from Government stock seed, and mother seed, produced from pedigree seed. All other seed, including what was known last year as mother and permanent pasture seeds, will be certified to after machine-dressing and will be known as permanent pasture seed. Applications for certification of the three types certified to under field inspection closed in Gisborne at the end of last week, and in the district there are 23 areas with a total of 183 acres of ryegrass, of which 34 acres are pedigree and the remainder mother seed. In addition, there are seven acres of pedigree white clover and five acres of Montgomery red clover. Last, year there were 44 acres of what was then known as pedigree seed, no white clover was paddock-in-spected and four acres of Montgomery red clover. In addition, 1628 J acres of what was then known as mother seed and 4121. acres of permanent pasture seed were entered, but these areas now are not submitted for certification until after machine-dressing. ■ An increase in the areas already entered may eventuate later, for late entries are being received on payment of a penalty by the grower. In Hawke’s Bay the total entries are 2372 acres in the three classes eligible for paddock-inspection, compared with 1435 acres of the corresponding seed at the closing date last year. In all, 5121 acres came forward for paddock inspection under the old scheme in Hawke’s Bay last year.
