KARAPIRO TUNNEL SHAFTS TO GIVE ACCESS Two shafts, one of 120 ft. and the other of 180 ft., have been sunk at the site of the new hydro-electric scheme at Karapiro, near Cambridge. The shafts are required to give access to the diversion tunnel, the construction of which has been commenced. Through this tunnel the waters of the Waikato River will pass, when the 1000 ft. dam across the river is under construction. From each shaft tunnellers will work until the hill through which the conduit passes is pierced. Hydraulic hand drills and explosives are used to remove the rock, and pumps are employed to remove the seepage. The debris will be used for concrete. Modern machinery for pushing on with the work is expected to arrive shortly. In the meantime good progress is being made with the means available and night and day shifts are being worked.
