BOWLS AND TENNIS

TOKOMARU BAY OPENING (Herald Correspondent.) The official opening of the 1940-41 season of the bowling and tennis club was held in Tokomaru Bay last weekend. The President of the bowling club. Mr. A. W. Wilkins, welcomed the visitors, of whom there were many present from Tolaga Bay and Ruatoria, and one each from the Gisborne clubs. Mr. J-. Todd, president of the tennis club, before declaring the courts open, extended good wishes to all players. Results were:— Bowling.—Paerata, Russell, Law, Birch (s) 6‘ v. Clark, Forrester, J. Hankey, R. Johnson (s) 35; St. John, Hunter, Wilkins, Campbell (s) 17 v. Carter, Cockery, Winter, E. Hankey (s) 19; Lawrence, Richardson, Bradley, Tempest (s) 18 v. Pavarno, Sloan, Beard, Short (s) 27; Powell, Smith, Kay, Taylor (s) 24 v. Pethick, Foley, Harries, Morgan (s) 11; Burrell, Duncan, Guthrie, Morrison (s) 23 v. Jackson, Christopherson, Savage, Rennie (s) 13; Ward, Surman, Nevin, Beattie (s) 20 v. O’Sullivan, Forrester, Ransley, Burns (s) 22. Tennis. —A Yankee handicap tournament resulted in a tie between Mrs. J. W. Rogers and Mrs. G. Olliver in the ladies’ section, each winning 12 games, and Mrs. Rogers eventually winning. In the men’s section J. W, Smith emerged the winner with 14 games.
