Tomblcson if L Before - commencing the business, the council, passed a vote of cOndorlencel with Mr. Tombleson, whose sister,; Mrs. Rutherford, met her death in an accident a few days ago. The Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C.LWebb,* wrote confirming his verbal intimation of September 25 offering a full wages subsidy in respect of the employment of 25 registered married men for 13 weeks for clearing willows from Te Arai Stream, provided no assistance was granted from the Public Works Department. The chairman said that the proposed Public Works Department grant was- £SOO for machinery. The work could not be commenced before next month. The council decided to thank the Minister for his offer. Metalling Proposal. Mr. J. M. Monekton wrote agreeing to find £lO4 15s 5d if the Government and the council would contribute £SOO for metalling on Panikau road.. Mr. Hall explained that no Government grant was available for the work, but with the £IOO the council had placed on the estimates and the sum available from the settlers it might be possible to do a certain amount of lpetalling, say, 14 chains, and he suggested placing such a proposal before Mr, Monekton.
The county overseer estimated that the cost would be £l4 a chain.
The council agreed to submit the proposal to Mr. Monekton. * . The district engineer, Mr. O. G. Thornton, advised that Cabinet had approved of the authorisation ,of a grant of £I3OO for the road from Hangaroa junction to Waikaremoana, the county contribution to be £IOO. The secretary of the Waiherere blocks, Mr. E. Hooper, made application for the grading and metalling of the right-of-way at Waiherere, a dis-tance-of-10.'chains'from the farm gate. —TheJ overseer was asked to make an inspection and report. - Gray’s Bush Access
The Waihirere and Gray’s Bush Domains Board wrote asking the council to form the access into Gray’s Bush/Domain as a contribution to the board’s work. —Messrs. Benson and Tietjen did not think that the proposed work was necessary, as at present cars could be turned easily, but-with a metalled surface and drains on each sise, turning would be made more' difficult. The overseer was asked to report on the proposal. The county ranger, Mr. E. A. Cameron, reported that 176 head of stock; were seized for impounding during the month ended October 12.
