OBITUARY
AUCKLAND PIONEER MEMORIES OF BISHOP One who could with some confidence claim to be the oldest living person born in the neighbourhood of Auckland, Mrs. Martha Carter, died on Saturday in her ninety’-eighth year. Mrs. Carter was born at Tamaki on August 27, 1843, and for more than 70 years had lived in the same home at 34 Ireland street, Ponsonby. Mrs. Carter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Enabling, went to Auckland in 1842, and lived for a time at Tamaki before going to Brookby to take up farming. She was educated at St, John’s College, and as a small girl knew both Bishop Sehvyn and Mrs. Selwyn. At the age of 11 Mrs. Carter went to work in Auckland, her parents at that time having settled at Brookby. She was married at the age of 19 to Mr. Frederick Carter. Mr. Carter, who was a well-known carrier, died in 1902. Mrs. Carter was associated with the Baptist Tabernacle from its earliest days, and assisted in the establishment of the Manurewa Children’s Home.
