GISBORNE’S HISTORY

PUBLICATION POSTPONED CENTENNIAL DECISIONS FUND TO BE RESERVED A decision to postpone the publication of the historical survey of the development of Gisborne was made yesterday- afternoon at a meeting of the East Coast Provincial Centennial Council. The possibility of a shortage of paper, and the.unsettled times through which the world is passing were factors that led to the decision. /

The chairman,. Mr. Chas. Matthews, said it was not the proposal to cancel the publication, but merely to postpone it. It was understood that the manuscripts were intact and that they would be. available for future, use. Power of Council Doubted The. secretary, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, read a copy of the Act dealing with centennial funds, and it was decided to communicate with the Government in regard to the council’s power to reserve the funds in view of the changed times since the Act was framed. The council desired to retain the. funds for use in the publication when possible. After the committees’ reports had been, adopted, it was decided to. postpone the centennial celebrations until a later date, so' that the efforts of all could be concentrated on patriotic work. It was decided to proceed with the inquiries* concerning, ap Exhibition sound shell for the Centennial Parle at Wailcanae. Beach. Mr, J. 11. Hall suggested that the excavation of-the proposed sunken theatre at the park should be done during the winter by Scheme 13 labour. He said that it could be carried out at no cost. The registrar .was.hard put to it at present to find employment fty several men who were interested in such work. Opposition to Excavation. The suggestion was opposed by Mr, A. J. Nicol, who explained that sufficient funds were not yet available for the purchase of a sound shell and that -the. committee, of the Waikanae Beach Improvement Society would not favour the excavation in view of the uncertain position in regard, to finance. It was not a major work, and, if carried out, would deprive the society of much of its car parking facilities. After a further short discussion, in which Mr. Hall said it could be made use of as a sunken theatre for the present platform, it was decided to take no move in the meantime. There were present Mr. Chas. Matthews, chairman, Colonel R. F. Gambrill, Messrs. Wilfrid C. Kohn. M. J, White, Thos. Todd, I. J. Quigley, James Chrisp, A. J. Nicol, A* A. Fraser, A. L. Tempest. J. H.
