TOLAGA CONTRIBUTIONS WOMEN COLLECT £372 £lO FROM MAORI PEOPLE Cheques amounting to £382 2s 3d were received yesterday afternoon at the meeting of the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council from the Tolaga Bay Ladies’ Patriotic Committee, a covering letter explaining some special provisiohs. .Points in the letter were the subject of reference by. members of the council who had returned, from the recent conference in Wellington. The president of the Tolaga Bay committee, Mrs. F. W. Shelton, wrote that £372 2s. 3d was the amount collected at* Tolaga Bay on May 18 in an appeal for patriotic funds. A special donation, of £lO had been mode by the. Hauiti Maoris for the appeal of the Joint Council of the Order of St; John and the Red Cross Society, In the terms of a permit granted the committee it was desired that the amount-be. allocated-as follows: Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Society, Gisborne, £6O; for rehabilitation purposes, Tolaga Bay “ returned soldiers, £150; in trust by the East Coast council on account of the committee, £162 2s 3d; total, £372 2s 3d;" The Tolaga Bay committee’s application to be made an expending agent was granted. Rehabilitation Fund Reporting on the. decision of the conference regarding the rehabilitation fund for returned men, Mr. F. R. Ball said that the policy would be.a uniform one and a man who enlisted; at Tolaga Bay would receive similar treatment in applying for relief whether that application was made at Tolaga Bay or anywhere else in the Dominion. The conference had endeavoured to arrange a scheme to give equality to the benefits throughout New Zealand. Returned men would be required to present their paybooks and have contributions entered as a check on payments. Colonel R. F. Gambrill considered that the new arrangement would be workable for'lo or 15 years and then would break down as paybooks were mislaid and lost. Veterans of the Great War had a record of payments kept at the place of their enlistment. The Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Asso • ciation sent money all over the Dominion to centres where those requiring benefits settled after having returned from war service. On behalf of the Tolaga ladies’ committee, Mr. A. L. Tempest expressed its gratitude to Mr. Wilfrid C. Kohn and his party, who had contributed to the success of the appeal.
