The Commodore’s Dilemma
The fact that almost every picture of Admiral Sir Henry Harwood, commander of H.M.S. Exeter in the battle of the River Plate, in which the Graf Spee was destroyed, showed him with his hands clasped in front was explained by Commodore W. E. Parry, of H.M.S. Achilles, in an address to members of the Auckland branch of the Navy League. Commodore Parry explained that Admiral, then Commodore, Harwood, lost all his uniforms when a direct hit was scored on his vessel, and that those he purchased in South America were incorrectly supplied with buttons. The admiral, he said, always concealed the illegal sixth button with his hands, this need explaining bis stance.
