HUGE ARMS DRIVE

BRITISH CAMPAIGN SECRET REPORT FRAMED IMMENSE COAL OUTPUT GOVERNMENT’S PROJECT (Reed. May 23, 9 a.m.) LONDON, May 22. Britain’s home forces are gathering for a tremendous arms drive. Sir Walter Citrine, secretary of the Trades Union Council, has prepared a secret report after consultations with the Minister of Aircraft Production, Lord Beaverbrook, the Minister of Supply, Mr. Herbert Morrison, and the Minister of Labour, Mr. Ernest Bevin.

Mr. Morrison is resigning the chairmanship of the London County Council and throwing all his energies into the drive for supplies. The Secretary for Mines, Mr. D. R. Grenfell, in a broadcast, appealed to thousands of examiners to return to the coalfields. He said that numbers of young men under military age were also required. The Government was preparing for the production this year ol' 200,000,000 tons of coal for internal consumption—easily the highest total in the country’s history. In addition there was a great demand for coal to export, especially to France.
