Advice has been received from Melbourne of the engagement of Valda, second daughter of ana Mrs. A. Zachariah, Oorrong foad, Caulfield, and formerly of Gisborne, to Samuel Leon, third son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Halberin, Elwood, Melbourne. Two sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Kirk, formerly of Gisborne,, have volunteered for war service. Mr. Keith Kirk, the eldest son, a barrister-at-law in London, is already overseas, while Mr. Horace Kirk, the second son, managing director of Kirk Motors, Limited, Auckland, is in camp at Papakura. Miss J l . M. Wilderspin, at present a member of the staff of.St. Margaret's College, Christchurch, has been appointed to the staff of the Gisborne High School to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of-Miss M. L. Brown. She will start her duties at the beginning of the third term. During the second term Miss L. M. Heath will fill the position as a relieving teacher , > Before play commenced at the Wairoa Golf Club’s links recently, Mr. H. Crichton, the president, made a presentation of a wristlet watch to Mr. C. H. P. Ryan, the popular match secretary, who has since left for Trentham.
