WRONG MOUNT TAKEN
INDIGNITY TO RACEHORSE JOURNEY TO CAMP One of Hawera’s best-known racehorses, Student Prince, suffered the indignity on Tuesday of being herded into an open cattle truck with five other horses of less exalted lineage and entrained for the Mounted Rifles regimental camp at the Waverley racecourse. A member of a Ilawcra platoon leaving for camp had been told by a Ilawera citizen that he would secure a horse for his use to be entrained with the others, instructions being given that the animal was to be secured by halter from a paddock in Vogel street and taken to the station. Student Prince duly arrived at the Hawera station and travelled in lowly slate to Waverley.
Meanwhile, Mr. J. Brown, his owner-trainer, had discovered Student Prince’s disappearance and in the subsequent search every street and road in the vicinity was co\ered, a trip being made even as far afield as Eltham, 12 miles away. Someone thought of making inquiries from neighbours and from one little girl the fact was gleaned that a man in military uniform had taken Student Prince away. A horse float was sent from Hawera early in the afternoon to bring 'back Student Prince, the vehicle on its down journey being used to convey the mount intended for camp use.
