INSURANCE SCHEME

INJURIES THROUGH RUGBY ASSISTANCE FOR PLAYERS BENEFIT FOR WAIROA MEN (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. In view of the fact that the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union is to discontinue its scheme of insurance for injured players, the Wairoa County Rugby Sub-Union has under consideration tiie establishment of a scheme here to assist injured players who will not come within the scope of the Social Security Act. It was explained by the secretary, Mr. W. G. Brownlie, at the annual meeting of the sub-union that he had received advice from the Hawke’s Bay union to the effect that in view of the social security benefits the Hawke’s Bay union proposed to discontinue its scheme. However, he had beard since then that the position; was to be reviewed by the Hawke’s Bay body. Mr. Brownlie explained that under the Social Security Act no provision was made for out-patients at the hospitals, and he thought the sub-union should consider some scheme for assisting those players whose injuries were not of a serious enough nature to warrant their admission to hospital. He had evolved a scheme whereby each player should be levied a sum of, say, 2s Gd and that some arrangement be made with one of the Wairoa doctors. Mr. R. J. Powdrell thought the suggestion was a good one. With such a scheme and the social security benefits the players would be in a much better position than they were before. On the motion of Mr. B. E. Parkinson, seconded by Mr. H. M. Croker, a recommendation along the lines suggested by the secretary is to be made to the incoming management committee. Election of Officers. There was a poor attendance at the meeting. The election of officers resulted:—Patron, Mr. A. T. Carroll; president, Mr. H. S. Nightingale; vicepresident, Mr. F. H. Mardon; hon. treasurer, Mr. B. G. Winter; hon. secretary. Mr. W. G. Brownlie; hon. auditor, Mr. W. A. Crarer; hon. surgeons, Drs. C. M. Debden-Wilkins and E. B. Jardine; senior selector, Mr. B. E. Parkinson; hon. solicitor, Mr. G. M. O'Malley; management committee, Messrs. H. M. Croker, C. F. Stone, J. Goldstone, W. S. Bilbrough, R. Bartlett, M. G. Mackay, and C. 11. Hall. Opening of Season. It was decided at a subsequent meeting of the new management committee that the 1940 season should open on Saturday, April 20, and- that nominations for all grades, senior, junior and third, close on Saturday, April 13. Players in the third grade it was agreed, would be required to be under the age of 17 on April 13 or under lOst 71b in weight. The committee decided to again assist clubs with third grade travelling expenses, and on each playing Saturday the club which travelled would .be required to contribute 16s toward the cost. The Wairoa Sub-Union’s representative on the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union, Mr. S. S. P. Hamilton, was reelected. and the president and the secretary were appointed to represent the sub-union at the annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay union in Napier on Saturday.
