CHARTER OF SHIPPING
BRITISH SATISFACTION HOPES FOR FUTURE (Reed. March 1, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 29. In his presidential address to the Chamber of Shipping, Sir Philip Halden said that satisfactory conditions of charter had been reached with the Government for the requisitioned shipping. It now Is hoped that the industry would ’succeed in securing rates of hire providing for operating costs and for depreciation which would leave at least a margin to cover a fair return on capital—sufficient to allow something tangible towards building reserves which would urgently be required after the war “Anyone who thinks that nationalisation is the cure for all ills should be reminded of Australia’s experience after the last war, when she tried the running of ships.”
