“KITCHEN” AFTERNOON MISS J. KIRKHAM HONORED (Herald Correspondent.) A delightful “kitchen” afternoon was given on Tuesday by Mrs. P. G. Burton at her home in Ruatoria in honour of Miss Jean Kirkham, who is to be married to Mr. Trevor Coleman this month. In the large reception room, where the guests were entertained, the flowers were exquisite, lovely bowls of hydrangeas, magnolia, rambler roses and gladioli having been used for decoration. On arrival the guest of honour and her mother, Mrs. A. J. H. Kirkham, were each presented with a beautiful bouquet of carnations by Miss Noeleen Burton. An amusing competition was won by Miss Dwillis Kemp. With Mrs. J. M. MefTan as the accompanist, Mrs. Bert Akers and Miss J. Haszard, Wellington, entertained with delightful songs. A delectable afternoon tea was served, after which the bride-to-be, assisted by a bridesmaid-to-be, Miss Brenda Ludbrook, and other girl friends, opened the many gift parcels, revealing a useful array of articles for the kitchen for her future home. Miss Kirkham'thanked her hostess and guests for such a pleasant afternoon. Mrs. Burton received the guests wearing a becoming model frock of navy blue and white crepe romaine. Mrs. Kirkham wore a smart frock of floral ninon in green and rose tonings. Miss Ludbrook wore a pretty frock of floral ninon in beige and saxe blue tonings, ornamented with three gold tassels at the neckline. An attractive suit of London tan silk linen, inlet on the bodice with white Paris lace, and finished with jade green buttons and scarf to tone, was worn by the guest of honour.
