TRAINING CLASSES
SCIENCE IN THE HOME VALUE OF STUDY ADDRESS IN WAIROA (.Special to llic Herald.) WAIROA. this day. For the purpose of explaining the aims and objects of the Sarah Anne Rhodes Fellowship in Home Science, Miss 'Hazel Johnson, 8.N., Sc., visited Wairoa yesterday at the invitation of the Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay, Federation of Women’s Institutes and spoke to members of the federation. Miss Johnson won a Carnegie Fellowship under which she visited America, Canada. Great Britain, Denmark, 'Sweden and Australia, her headquarters at present being at Massey Agricultural College. Palmerston North. She stated that the object of her visit was to draw attention to the desirable returns in the way of a healthier community and more satisfying homes which result when the problems of home-making were scientifically studied. She then went on to explain the services made available by the scheme. Through institutes and such organisations, which took the responsibility for local expenses, public lectures were organised. One or more, if time permitted, might,.be held in each town or place, being visited. In addition, it was proposed to train local demonstrators and others already proficient in the subject, who would foe willing to put into practice what they learned and to explain it to others. This was carried out by the organisation of small private groups of women who met three times or more at weekly intervals. These gatherings were known as study group classes. As a follow-up to the study classes more advanced work in dressmaking was planned and this already had proved to be successful' in other parts of New Zealand. It consisted of six or eight lessons. Miss Johnson stated that it was her intention to visit Wairoa early next year to form classes, and those interested were advised to communicate with the voluntary organiser. Miss Spence.
