The engagement is announced ot Russell Molloy, only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. M. Goodwin, Palmerston North, and Eleanor May. younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Carr, Riverside road, Gisborne. An engagement is announced between Henry Arthur, fourth son of Mrs. A. R. Hopkins and the late Mr. H. W. Hopkins, Remuera. Auckland, and Joan Bea’rice, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Knight and the late Mr. J. H. P. Knight, Patutahi.
Ladies’ Auxiliary The monthly meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A. was held at the Y.M.C.A. rooms on Thursday afternoon, members present including Miss W. Lysnar, chairman. Mesdames W. G. Alexander, A. F. Excell, F. T. Robinson, R. W. J. Edwards, P. Hockley, L. Anderson, H. J. Poole, A. E. Parkinson and 'Miss E. M. Dunn. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames W. Carruthers, 11. D. Humphrey, L. Sarten ancl Miss J. Green. The balance sheet in connection with tlie recent spring fair, showing a profit of £7O 4s 9d, was adopted. In discussing .the fair, several suggestions were advanced m regard to tile next annual function. It was decided to endeavour to make the grounds surrounding the Y.M.C.A. more attractive by the formation of gardens at the entrance. Hard-Up Dance The members of the Gisborne Park Golf Club were responsible for the successful organisation of a jolly “hard-up” dance held in the dance room adjoining the clubhouse, on Saturday night, to further the candidature of Miss N. Henderson, the spor's representative in the centennial queen carnival campaign./ Decorations of coloured streamers formed an effective setting for the dancers, some of whom had chosen costumes suitable to the occasion, while others appeared in conventional evening dress. Blue flag lilies and daffodils were artistically combined in the decoration of the lounge, and in the reception room, where a delicious savoury supper was served, daffodils intermingled wPh delicate greenery adorned the tables, a large log fire warming the room. The music was supplied by Mrs. Thomson’s orchestra, and Mrs. R. Howell contributed an extra. The excellent supper arrangements were in the hands of the members of the ladies’ committee. j Farewell Party j On Saturday night Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Dryland, who arc leaving Gisborne shortly for Auckland, were farewelled, at a delightful party given by Mrs. J. Sim, at her home in Iranui road. Iceland poppies and daffodils were artistically combined in the decoration of the drawing-room, and a large log fire radiated comfort. Cards were enjoyed-and the guests also spent an enjoyable time chatting with their friends. Supper was served in the diningroom, primroses lending a springlike air to the charmingly-arranged table. The hostess was wearing a graceful frock of scarlet brocade, and Mrs. Dryland looked smart in a frock of black cloque with white and scarlet accents. Dance in Patutahi A charming decorative scheme completely transformed the Patutahi Hall on Friday night, when Mr. and Mrs. G. V. Smith and family entertained a large number of friends at a delightful dance. Ferns and delicate greenery, intermingled with golden wattle, adorned the wall spaces, and advantageouslyplaced bowls of pink and scarlet camellias completed the artistic effect. The music was supplied by Mrs. W. Thomson’s orchestra, and extras were contributed by Mrs. Thomson, Miss J. Scott, and Mr. C. Salmon. A delicious supper was served at tables beautified with pink and scarlet camelllias and sprays of pink japonica. Mrs. Smith, who in her part of hostess was assisted by her daughter, Miss Molly Smith, was wearing an elegant frock of black needlerun lace with an appliqued chiffon inset on the corsage. Miss Smith was smart in a frock of rose pink chiffon cut on simple lines. Mrs. B. Smith, Waimata Valley, wore a becoming frock of floral organza with black accents.
