THE WEATHER Last Night’s Forecast General situation: A deep complex depression covers New Zealand with the lowest pressure west of Cook Strait. Pressure is rising slowly over south-eastern Australia. f orecast: Winds north-westerly at first over the North Island and southerly over the South Island, but strong southerlies probably becoming general within 24 hours. Seas: New Zealand waters rough north of Farewell. Spit, elsewhere moderate, but later rising south of East Cape and in Cook and- Fovenux Straits. Eastern Tasman Sea: Strong southwesterly to southerly winds, rough seas. Weather: Fair on the West Coast of the South Island, elsewhere cloudy and unsettled with widespread intermittent rain and snow on the

ranges, the snow extending at times to the lower levels in the eastedn and southern areas of the South island. Temperatures: Becoming colder.
