BASKETBALL WINNERS FOUND IN MANY GRADES LAST WEEK

As many of the basketball matches at Greymouth last Saturday were played to decide the winners of several grades, some close and interesting games resulted. St Josephs played well to beat Karoro B in the final of the B, grade competition. Their combination was superior to that of Karoro B and they never missed an opportunity with quick, good passing. C. Connors secured many goals through her accuracy and B. McGrath played consistently for Karoro B. Lake Brunner and Lane, Walker, Rudkin A, by both winning their games, became the joint winners of the fourth grade competition. Both teams deserved the win, showing keenness and ability throughout the season. . Last year’s runners-up in the third grade—Nurses, were more successful, taking first place in this grade. Consistency was their main asset. The winner of the second grade has not yet been found, as Sacred Heart have yet to play Karoro A. A win in this game will make Sacred Heart the winners of this grade, whereas a defeat would make them joint-holders with Rapahoe. Technical Old Giris came through the season unbeaten in the A grade, and thus are the winners in the grade lor the second year in succession. A fast and interesting game was played on Saturday in the second grade between Blackball A and Rapahoe A. Interest was held right to the end, as the half time score was six all, and the final whistle went with Blackball A winning 13-11. Blackball’s three defence played excellently, saving their side several times by good interception. F. Curtain was noticeable for Rapahoe, although all the team played well.
