MR LLOYD RETIRES AS DISTRICT CHILD WELFARE OFFICER
Tributes to the services given by Mr D. L-loyd, who has retired from the Child Welfare Department because of ill-health, were paid by speakers at a function yesterday, arranged by representatives of organisations directly or indirectly connected with the department. Mr Lloyd has completed 20 year; in the Public Service, first as a Justice Department official and in latter years as district child welfare officer at Greymouth. Expressing his regret that Mr Lloyd had been forced to retire from the department because of ill-health, Mr F. A. Kitchingham, who presided at the function, said that the courteous and capable manner in which Mr Lloyd had performed his duties had made him a popular officer. Many people had benefited from the advice given by Mr Lloyd during his service with the department. Mr Lloyd’s remarkable success was the best illustration of his tact in handling all types of people, said Mr J. Harper, the Hokitika officer of the department. Splendid service had been given to y the department by Mr Lloyd, and hi’s ill-health was partly due to his hard work. Senior-Sergeant R. C. Mcßobie, on behalf of the Police Department, said that Mr Lloyd always had been on the side of leniency, which was all to the good, and he had won many friends. Mr Lloyd had given kindly advice to young delinquents in preference to sending them _ to court, an action which was praiseworthy, added Senior-Sergeant McRcbie. , . , Continually on duty for the good and welfare of youth, Mr Lloyd had achieved results of which any man could be justly proud, and he had established a high reputation, said the Rev. Father T. Daly. Miss C. Brown, an honorary officer, Mr A. A'Court. of the Magistrate’s Court staff, and Rev. K. G. Aubrey also spoke. Numerous boys had been under ms care and some were now in important positions in commercial and industrial spheres, said Mr Lloyd in replying to the tributes paid by speakers. The privilege and joy. of moulding the youths into gooct citizens was sufficient recompense to him in his work. Mr Llovd thankee, the honorary, officers for their splendid assistance. Mr Kitchingham, on behalf oi the gathering, presented Mr Lloyd with a suitcase. The Rev. Father Daly also made a special presentation.
