British Pay Increases
Men working in British industry are today earning an average of just over twice as much as in 1938, the Ministry of Labour announced last night. The average earnings of manual workers, including overtime and piece rates, is now £7 5s 9d a week—lll per cent, more than in 1938. Women working in industry have had a 148 per cent, increase, youths under 18 136 per c ®nt. increase. and girls under 18 180 per cent, increase. Combining these figures the Ministry produced the overall average of £6 4s Id a week, which is 133 per cent, more than in 1938. London, September 28.
