AUSTRALIA WILL NOT USE SOUTH AFRICAN SCRUM

SYDNEY, This Day (Rec. 11.15 a.m.). —Trevor Allan, captain and coach' of .the Australian Rugby Union team for the first test against the British Isles in Brisbane next Saturday, will not use the South African scrummage system. The Australians will pack the orthodox 3-4-1 scrum as against the South African style used by New South Wales last Saturday. Allan can see no great benefit from using the South African scrum unless the team follows the methods adopted by South Africa in using the eighth forward in the backline. Allan’s view is that unless an adequate cover defence can be provided from the South African packing system there is little value in winning the ball. The Sydney Herald writer, Frank Tierney, that the selection of the young New Zealander, Ernie Hills, in the Australian team caused some perturbation, as though Hills has plenty of pace and tackles fairly well, he is noted in Victorian football for poor handling.
