Out For Season
The improving Blaketown fiveeighths, S. Stewart, has played his last game for the season. A wrist injury received earlier in the season, is reported to have been found to be a broken bone, and his arm will be in plaster for some time. Stewart was showing considerable promise, and his absence will further deplete the Blaketown side which has lost a number of players this season.
M.C.C. Team For Australia More than usual interest attaches to the traditional Gentlemen v. Players match which began at Lord’s today as the M.C.C. sub-committee which picks the side for the tour of Australia and New Zealand will meet tomorrow. Gentlemen were sent in on a wet pitch, but it did not prove tricky. With one of the most spectacular displays of hitting seen for many years, F. Brown put himself foremost amongst the candidates for the captaincy of the touring side. Brown, who went in with the score at six for 194, punished the Players’ attack so vigorously that he scored 122 out of 131 in 110 minutes. Scores —Gentlemen: First innings, 325 (Dewes 94, Doggart 75, Brown 122; Bedser two for 77, Tattersail three for 38, Wright three for 103). Players: First innings, none for one wicket.—London, July 27.
