LATE NEWS REDS IN KOREA LAUNCH A BIG ATTACK

TOKIO, This Day (Rec 3.10 p.m.). —The United Press says that North Korean troops attacked the American defenders in the middle of the Allied, line this morning in the First stage of the grand-scale Communist drive. Waves of Communist troops hurled themselves against the American First Cavalry Division positions at Hwanggan, eight miles north-west of Yongdong, while other Communists assaulted the American 25th Division which is holding the line on the Cavalry’s right flank. The Communists attacked in heavy rain with artillery support. Their immediate objective appeared to be the Kumchon, a railway and highway centre 14 miles south-west of Hwanggan.

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day — Conditions were pleasant for work at Riccarton this morning. F. D. Jones sent Watchword by herself over four flights, and she gave a satisfactory display. High Orders made friends when he went fast over two flights. Pictorial has been scratched for the Haldon Stakes; Saxonia, Brabazon Handicap; Royal Swing, Kennels Hack Handicap; and Pink Clover, Hunt Cup. Though K. Nuttall was named to pilot Specialist in the Lawford Steeplechase, following his good schooling yesterday, there seems to be a doubt now about this arrangement.

Jon Rosa, who arrived yesterday from the North Island, though all right when shipped from Wellington on Wednesday night, did not seem quite at his best when he got here, so he must, be classed as a doubtful runner tomorrow. Night Charm, one of J. L. Muir’s team, is suffering from a bruised foot. Earldale, a Winter Cup candidate also in J. L. Muir’s team, had a mishap this morning. He slipped and fell when leaving the stable on the way to the track and damaged both his knees. . , , H. A. Anderton has arrived here from Wingatui with two steeplechasers, Libellula and Quadrille. The latter is in two races tomorrow, but will start in the Hunt Cup. Three other members of the team, Desert Trek, Comeaway, and St Columba; will come later for the Grand National meeting. The Wingatui trainer, F. Shaw, was at the track this morning with* Jamell, Roving Robin, Man o’ Kent, and Light Tea, who has injured his wither. Hi may not be a starter in the Law’ord Steeplechase.. Diameter will not run in the Longbeaeh Hurdles. There is nothing wrong, but he will be kept for hack hurdle events later. I. ord Cranleigh, in two races, will start in the Haldon Stakes. All Hurry is engaged in both hack races and his programme is not. definite. Young Bob is a doubtful starter m the Lawford Steeplechase; also Re 7 lampago in the Longbeaeh Hurdles and Sylvan in the Kennels Hack Handicap.
