N.Z. FAMILIES WITH TWO OR MORE CHILDREN

WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.).—The number of families in New Zealand with two or more children, to which family benefits are paid, has increased by 7289 in the past year. These figures were quoted by Mr J. Turnbull, advocate fOr the Public Service Association, to the Government Service Tribunal yesterday. Mr Turnbull said that at March 31 last 160,334 benefits were being paid by the Social Security Department to such families. The comparable figure a year before was 153,045 and two years before 141,812. The latest figures showed that the number of families with one dependent child was oply 94.776. Mr Turnbull produced these figures in support of a contention that the number of families badly affected by the rise in the cost of living was large and growing.
