Egg Prices: Big Drop From Monday Next

WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.).—A considerable drop in egg prices to cover the season of more plentiful supply will take effect next Monday. July 31, said the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr Bowden, today. ' 1 , He recalled that the Government had decided last February that there should be only two different prices for eggs each year, instead of the many confusing changes in the price level which had previously occurred. Under the new procedure, prices were so calculated that the consumer paid the same amount for eggs over 12 months as he would have done under the old system. A price order enforcing the new retail prices will be gazetted today. In the various marketing areas, which include the majority of the urban residential areas those prices will be:— North Island marketing areas.—3s 3d per dozen heavy grade; 3s Id standard grade; 2s lid meduim. Pullet grade eggs in Auckland will be 2s s£d a dozen; in Hawke’s Bay, 2s 41d, and in Wellington, 2s sd. South Island marketing areas other than ■Westland. —3s Id a dozen heavy grade, 2s lid standard, 2s 9d medium and 2s 3d for pullets. Westland.—3s 4d a dozen heavy grades; 3s 2d standard; 3s medium; and 2s Gid for pullets.

Elsewhere the retail price will be a halfpenny per dozen lower, except where retailers can increase the consumer price to cover the extra cost of inward freight charges.
