Messrs Carty and Krebs will replace two officers who are returning to New Zealand on completion of their secondment. This was announced last evening by the Minister of Immigration (Mr W. Sullivan). Two other officers of the department, Messrs L. I. Phillips (Wellington) and. A. Munro (Dunedin) will leave at the same time. Fire Services Council When appointed, the Chief Fire ’Officer to the New* Zealand Fire Services Council will be worse off financially than either of the metropolitan fire chiefs in Auckland or Wellington. Although he will receive about £lOO a year more than the Auckland and Wellington fire, brigade superintendents, they also have the benefit of a free house, a car, lighting and firing. No provision for housing is made for the proposed appointee. Stating this at a meeting of the Wellington Fire Board yesterday, the chairman (Mr S. S. Dean) said the council had approached the Public Service Commission with a request that the advertised salary of £ll5O to £1250 be increased. The commission, he said, was unable to increase the amount as it did not have the necessary power. “The salary offered is not sufficient to attract the man who is required in the Dominion,” said Mr Dean. He said to date six applications had been received from New Zealand, two from South Africa, and one from Australia. No applications had been received from Britain, where, according to press cablegrams, there had been criticism of the salary offered. —(P.A.)
