Cogitation And Personality Are Double Prospects

[SPECIAL TO STAR] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.—The Ashburton County Racing Club will have a well-filled programme for its autumn meeting tomorrow, and one race, the Novice Stakes, will probably be run in two diVisions. Some well performed hacks will contest the Mayfield Hack Handicap, including Cogitation, who, if he wins, will have to do his future racing in open company. Zarcon has raced consistently this season, but has invariably lost her chance by bad beginnings. Show Boy and Pacific Edition ran fair races at Oamaru and Song Girl filled third place in her race at Amberley last month after losing a lot of ground at the start. Love Letter has been working better than for some time past and a win for her is overdue.

Mightgo’s Prospects Mightgo, the big dividend payer at Wingatui, is also in the seven furlong hack event, and will be better suited over the shorter journey, but will be up against better class than at Wingatui. Of the remainder, Profane, who won his only race on the Ashburton course, and has been placed there also, makes most appeal. If he raced up to his track ability, he would have been out of hacks before now.

Duvaals and Personality share the honours of top weight in the Maronan Handicap. The former has not raced prominently in recent weeks, but Personality’s third placing at Wingatui points, to his prospects. There are many below this pair capable of executing solid performances oyer the mile jonrney, these including Clyde Bridge, Saieda, Trident, Balkis, Disturbance, Boost, Sir Abbot and Responsive, while lotver down the list the claims of Open Range, Prince Defaulter and Tranbycroft will have to be considered. It may be noted that Sir Abbot carried more stable confidence than either Winning Cheer or Cogitation at Oamaru, but while the two last-named won, he failed badly over six furlongs. Stagdance and Entrancing are likely to dispute favouritism in the Moreton Hack Handicap. They galloped well together over six furlongs today with Entrancing doing the better at the post, but the former, has only to reproduce his Amberley form to be difficult.

Kirkella Not Starting

The initial showings of Kirkella and Watchword against more seasoned jumpers in the Hinds Hack Hurdles were being awaited with special interest by Riccarton trackwatchers, but the former will be missing. Although he did not appear to have suffered any ill-effects after his fall on Wednesday, he was [sore yesterday, and will have to be [given a week’s spell before being worked again. Watchward has done everything right in her schooling, and has only to miss trouble to make good. The track promises to provide firm going without being fast. Selections are:— Hinds Hack Hurdles. —Watchword, Theocritus, Night Ruler. Novice Stakes. —Snow Clad, Final Cast, Air Travel. Lyndhurst Trot.—-Bay Jack, Grattan Chief, Alluck. Mayfield Hack Handicap.—Cogitation, Zarcon, Profane. Dromore Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase.—Nor-wester, Master Mishna, Turora. Maronan Handicap.—Personality, Disturbance, Tranbycroft. Moreton Hack Handicap.—Stag? dance, Entrancing, Decameron. Winchmore Trot. —Spring Fancy, Farlena, Gallant Satin.
