Sewage from all connected properties in Ashmore - avenue now passed to the Newcastle street sewer via the sewer laid across the Ward street playground, and connections to the boundary had been made for all properties not yet connected, reported the engineer, Mr A. J. Fairmaid, to the Greymouth Borough Council last night. No household sullage water now passed into the open drain in Sturge street, as a result of any lack of preparation by the council, and the coming week should see the completion of all work . required to eliminate household sullage water throughout the length of Taylor creek, except from two dwellings below the Bright street terrace near where the creek emerges into Newcastle street, the report continued. The reservoir has been kept full by an average daily pump run of 21.16 hours. A blown joint in the Bright street main, near Stafford street, was repaired, the engineer said. , J The librarian, Miss E. Webster, reported that issues for May, which included issues made by the country library service, totalled 4593. Additions to stock amounted to 105 books and receipts for the month, made up mainly of fees and fines, amounted to £l6 17s 6d. Further conveniences were required at the Opera House, the Lyceum Hall and the Blaketown Hall, and in most cases the matter was being attended to, stated the inspector of nuisances, Mr J. Guerin, in his monthly report. Fie had noted a big improvement in the conveniences at the Sturge street hall. In regard to complaints received about the convenience at the Recreation Ground, which was also referred to in Mr Guerin’s report, the council decided to increase the attendances of the cleaner to twice a week.

PUBLIC CONVENIENCE TO BE ERECTED NEAR THE CHILDREN’S PARK Exhaustive inquiries had been made regarding the erection of a public convenience in the vicinity of the Children’s Park, and a site more suitable to the people using the park, and also, to those passing along the street, cannot be located. It was, therefore, recommended that, the convenience be erected on the site of the former Fire Brigade reel shed in Tainui street.

This was the text of a recommendation by the works committee which was placed before the Greymouth Borough Council at its meeting last night in reply to a letter received from the Greymouth branch of the National Council of Women complaining about the proposed site for the convenience. It was decided to advise the National Council of Women accordingly. Other recommendations by the works committee, which were adopted by the council, were as follows: — Concerning a letter from the Blaketown-Preston Road Ratepayers Association, regarding the completion of the pumping station in Collins street, it was recommended that the association be advised that the work will shortly be proceeded with. The borough engineer is also to discuss the alleged smoke nuisance of the Westland Laundry with the manager of the firm.

An itemised schedule is to be prepared and tenders called for the disposal of surplus assets in the new municipal office building. Concerning the proposal for the establishment of a depot for the Atlantic. Union Oil Company at Omoto road, it was recommended that: (1) the action of the borough engineer in granting permission for its establishment be approved; (2) that the agents be requested to erect a sixfoot fence along the road boundary; and (3) that the borough engineer take the necessary steps to secure the land required for the road from the southern apprqach to the Cobden bridge into Whall street. It was also recommended that the lease of land in front of the Karoro cemetery be disposed of by public auction. It was pointed out that the proposal to include a clause in the lease whereby the land might be converted to freehold at a later date could not legally be inserted, but that a freehold title could be given by negotiation at a later date.
