Harbour Board’s Electric Crane: Tests Satisfactory

The official weight test for the Greymouth Harbour Board s new electric crane was carried out yesterday afternoon.. The 90-ton crane lifted Et weight of 18 tons 16cwt, 25 per cent, more than its 15-ton limit. The test, which was made m .the presence of Harbour Board officials, a former chairman of the Board, Mr J. B. Kent, M.P., and Mr D. J. McKenzie, inspector of machinery at Greymouth, was successful in all respects, and the crane is now ready for immediate use. . , The date when the crane will- be placed in general operation at the No. 2 berth at the wharf has not yet been fixed. It will depend on the completion of other work of installation at the berth. Five additional electric switches have yet to be installed at intervals along the berth in, order that the crane may work the length of a ship rather than the ship be moved to suit the crane. The work of reconstructing the INO. 2 berth, two-thirds of which was completed last year, will also have to be finished before the crane can be placed in full use. Shipments of material for the work, including hardwood piles, due before Christmas arrived recently. Preliminary work has been commenced and the project will be Proceeded with immediately, now that equipment, in use during the erection of the crane, has been released. It is expected that the full task will take about two months.
