WOULD HISTORY OF EMPIRE GAMES ‘GLORIFY’ AUCKLAND?
AUCKLAND, June 12.—Mr S. S. Dean, of the New Zealand. Rugby Union, spoke at, a meeting of the N.Z. Olympic and British Games Association tonight. The meeting discussed a letter from the Auckland Organising Committee asking for the reconsideration of the Executive’s previous decision not to authorise the ’publication of an Empire Games History. The previous decision not to authorise the publication, was, however, confirmed. Mr Dean asserted: “I think it is a waste of money to publish a history for the glorification of Auckland, not amateur sport. I can see no good purpose being served by the publication of an official history of the games. The money should be spent in sending teams overseas.” A full report of the Empire Games would be published, said Mr H. A. Austad, of the N.Z.A.A.A, Such a report would fully satisfy the British Empire Games Federation in London. The letter from the Organising Committee observed that, even presuming that a loss would be sustained on publication, after making allowance for any such loss, the funds of the Empire Games Association would benefit by an increase of about 100 per cent as the result of the profits from the Games.
